We have always said that as Black Women, we have to own our own narrative. We have been left out of the magazine spreads, the ad campaigns, and the celebrations of beauty for far too long. So it’s up to us to put out the images and stories that represent us. And while advertisers have made it clear they don’t feel our beauty sells, thank God we know differently and in due time so will they. With social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, we have celebrated our beauty and uniqueness with an unapologetic vengeance–and a dash of slay. We have put black beauty on display and with hashtags such as #BlackGirlMagic and #MelaninPoppin we’ll continue to uplift and inspire black women of all shades. The beautiful ladies of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority did all that and more in a photoshoot that has been termed Melanin Illustrated. A celebration of black woman beauty at its finest. 56 professional black woman between the ages of 29 – 35, came together in Costa Rica for a beautiful shoot that showcased the diversity and magic of black beauty. Black women of all shapes, sizes, and shades showed up to flaunt their melanin in nude colored bathing suits, serving as the ultimate example that the days of black women being left out of the mainstream swimsuit conversation are over. These women showed the world what it looks like when we decide to take matters into our own hands and tell our own stories. We’re no longer waiting for mainstream media to recognize us–bye Sports Illustrated–instead, we’ll show you what you’ve been missing while uplifting and celebrating ourselves in the process.
Melanin Illustrated is the photoshoot that black women deserve. A beautiful representation of our beauty, our sisterhood, our resilience, our style, and our grace.
